Review:

The stage is one of the biggest in San Diego. The roof is stars. The theater is about 1,000 feet long and cluttered with aircraft. Yes, the USS Midway is Christian Community Theater's summer production venue. This year they bring us the world premiere of Eric Vest's musical, Let Freedom Ring, a patriotic score of music from WWI to the present under the direction of the composer and Paul Russell.

The cast of 18 actors, singers, and dancers are prompted by the questions of Hope, 13-year old Danica Waitley, and Sam's (Donal Pugh) explanation of each period. Her questions help Sam weave a story about the U.S.'s involvement in world conflicts, beginning with World War I.

Each era is highlighted by songs of the period. World War I features George M. Cohan's "Over There." WWII is remembered by the Mercer-Arlen hit, "Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive" as well as "Rum and Coca-Cola" and a medley of Andrews Sisters toppers. While Korea, the cold war, and Vietnam eras didn't produce huge hits, they were represented by favorites of the time. The Vietnam period is also represented by the protesters and Hair's "Aquarius" and "Let the Sunshine In," which had the audience rocking. The present time is highlighted with Johnny Cash's "Ragged Old Flag." The singers and dancers are accompanied by an excellent orchestra under the baton of Terry Hendricks.

Above the stage, on a three-panel projection screen, graphics and topical photographs enhance each of the sets. Costumer Kristin Preddy has provided an outstanding variety of costumes, while choreographer KC Grulli-Miller created many numbers for the large cast.

Directors Vest and Russell have brought us a big show that the audience really enjoyed. CCT is known for its summer spectacular. The venue adds an extra element to the production. Be sure to come early, wander on the deck of the USS Midway, and view the city skyline as well as the panorama of the view to the west.
